St. Louis is the largest city in Missouri It still retains its love affair with the Mississippi River, on whose banks can be heard ragtime, blues and Dixieland jazz. The Gateway Arch on the riverfront is, at 192m (630ft), the nation's tallest memorial. It honors St. Louis as the starting point for settlers who began their trek to the western frontier. Kansas City was once the eastern terminus for some of the West's most famous trails, such as the Oregon, California and Santa Fe. Kansas City is situated on the State line between Missouri to the east and Kansas to the west. Independence, 10 miles, (16km) east of Kansas City, is the Truman Library & Museum. St Joseph, north of Kansas City, boasts the Pony Express National Memorial. The Lake of the Ozarks in central Missouri has more than 1000miles (1600 km) of forested shoreline. It is home to three outstanding State parks – Bennett Springs, the Lake of the Ozarks and Ha Ha Tonka. The Branson Lakes Area - acclaimed for its picturesque beauty- The Great White River, was reconstructed to form Table Rock Lake, which was then dammed to create Lake Taneycomo. The area's three scenic lakes provide for fishing, and water activities.
