The Florida Keys are all about fishing and being out on the water. Fishing from the beach, deep sea, or near shore, you’re bound to catch at least a few big ones. But what are the best fishing times in the Florida Keys? Depending on the fish you want to catch it can vary. So we will go over the most popular sportfish and tell you the best times to catch them. For any of the following fish, be sure to check the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission’s guidelines on catching and keeping different species.

Tarpon
These huge fish tend to hang out in relatively shallow water near the shore. Their migration takes place April through June. Tarpon tend to hang around the Keys all year, because of the warm waters. The best fishing times we recommend are March through August.

Permit
They only weigh around 10-40lbs but permit are fast and powerful. Get one on your line and you’ll think you have something much bigger. They hang out in the flats, and also around deeper structures. There isn’t really a best time to catch them, permit are caught year round!

Bonefish
Bonefish are one of the Florida Keys’ most famous fish. They can be found in shallow flats but they’re super fast so keep an eye out. Try to target them during any season but remember they are catch and release only.

Redfish
Redfish are prized for their fight. Try to find them in the flats or channels in backwaters. They can be caught all year round!

Black Grouper
These can range from 8lbs-100lbs! You’ll most likely find them around wrecks and reefs bottom fishing. Grab them on live bait year round. In the Atlantic, many types of groupers including black, can’t be caught and kept during January-April.

Yellowtail Snapper
These things are tasty! Catch one and be sure to keep it (as long as it meets regulations). They’re a great catch all year round in the Florida Keys. The best months are October and November, but almost any month is good.

Mahi Mahi
These are some of the most delicious fish in the sea! They’re prized for both taste and fight. Once you hit a school, be sure to drop a few lines and catch more. The best fishing times for Mahi Mahi are April-July, August and September are also good months as well.
